The
"Penguin" |
|
You might be
wondering "why the penguin?" on each of the GVWBA pages.
Well, the "penguin" has become the "mascot" of the
Genesee Valley Women's Bowling Association. It would seem that
before there was a "mascot", GVWBA delegates to state and
national convention wore black slacks, black vests and white shirts while
attending meetings. While at one of the national conventions, the
designated driver had dropped the rest of the group off at the convention
center. While driving away, she noticed the other ladies heading
into the convention center (which happened to have a domed shape to it)
with their black slacks, black vests, white shirts and carrying their
purses or briefcases and thought to herself "the group looked like
penguins heading into an igloo". When the driver told the other
delegates, it apparently didn't take them long to decide to
"adopt" the penguin as the GVWBA mascot. From that time
forward, the penguin has been incorporated into the GVWBA pin design and
is used whenever possible in publicizing the Association and many of the
officers/directors of the Association have their own penguin
collections. Although the attire of the delegates may have changed
over the years, the penguin has always been a part of it in some way and
the GVWBA penguin pin has become a popular pin for trading at both state
and national convention. |
